What is a Crown?

A crown is used to fill only a small amount of tooth structure from the surface, about 1-2 mm or less. A crown is placed on the worn tooth area. It mimics the natural and beautiful shape of a tooth and creates great results in terms of color and shape. Crowns also provide an excellent solution for some aesthetic imperfections such as discolored teeth, cracked, broken, or misaligned teeth, as well as some chewing problems.

There are 2 main types of crowns:

  • Metal fused
  • Metal-free

Dentists are also seeking new and more aesthetic approaches for patients desiring a more aesthetic smile. These aesthetic needs enable the possibility of using new popular dental treatment methods such as Zirconium.

Will I Feel Pain During the Procedure?

The restoration procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Then, temporary crowns of the same color as the teeth are applied to prevent sensitivity to heat or cold. Very few patients feel a slight tingling sensation, but overall, the procedure is completed smoothly.

How Long Does the Treatment Take to Complete?

In individuals with no gum problem, the treatment is completed within 5-7 days. Depending on patient/dentist satisfaction, multiple check-up appointments may be needed.

What Will I Experience During the Procedure?

First, teeth are filled from 1 to 2 mm up or down. Then, an impression is taken and, in a laboratory, new crowns are created with Zirconium underlayer in the most suitable color for the patient's desires and tooth conditions. Finally, the crowns are adapted to the tooth and cemented during the final check-up. Patients can use them without distinction from their natural teeth.

What Are the Advantages of Zirconium Crowns?

The translucency of Zirconium crown is higher than that of metal fused porcelain crowns. They do not create dark color and do not encounter problems such as black color reflection from the gum line that may occur with metal fused porcelain crowns.

Why Are Zirconium Crowns Preferred?

In treating advanced color changes that cannot be treated with whitening methods, in cases of diastemas where orthodontic treatment does not give satisfactory results, in cases of chipped or slightly cracked teeth, in damaged old fillings, in the restoration of excessively worn teeth, in the use of bridges in the posterior group for aesthetic and rapid results, Zirconium crowns are preferred.

What Are the Aesthetic Advantages of Zirconium Crowns?

The metal that is the basis of classic porcelain crowns creates an opaque and artificial appearance by making teeth lifeless. With Zirconium, this problem is eliminated.

Will Zirconium Crowns Change the Taste or Smell in the Mouth?

They do not contain metal, so they cannot change the taste or create a smell.

Will Zirconium Crowns Change Color in the Future?

Thanks to their smooth and glossy surface, they do not accumulate plaque. Therefore, they are not affected by colored foods such as coffee, tea, and cigarette. Their color always remains the same as when applied.

How to Maintain Zirconium Crowns?

Like our natural teeth, crowns should be brushed twice a day and dental floss should be used once a day. If desired, a dental jet can be used. Regular check-ups every 6 months will prevent any future problems.

How Long Can Zirconium Crowns Be Used?

Regular check-ups every 6 months and regular oral hygiene will allow their use for many years. Teeth still have living tissues inside the crowns. If something goes wrong with the roots, the lifespan of the crowns may be shortened. As long as the roots are healthy, crowns can be used for many years.

Who Can Benefit from Zirconium Crown Treatment?

Zirconium crowns can be applied at any age after permanent teeth have grown. However, up to the age of 18-20, during the development period when the jaw is growing, a space between the teeth may be observed.
